Noise Policy
The Libraries are intended to be places of quiet study and research; please be considerate of those studying around you. We appreciate your cooperation. Customer service areas are not considered quiet study areas.
Cell Phones and Other Devices that Ring or Generate Audible Noise
- When you enter the Libraries, please silence your phone.
- You may use your phone outside of the library entrance, on the glass-covered bridge on the second floor of Bartle, or in any library stairwell.
- Headphones and laptop audio features may be used, but the noise level should be kept low enough not to bother other library users.
Information Commons - The Information Commons is for quiet collaboration or individual research.
- When you enter the Information Commons, please turn off the ringer to your phone.
- You may use your phone in designated areas outside of the library entrance, on the glass-covered bridge on the second floor of the Bartle, or in any library stairwell.
- Headphones and laptop audio features should be kept low so as not to disturb patrons.
Patrons whose quiet study is disrupted are strongly encouraged to contact any service desk.
Bartle Library
- 1st Floor East Reading Room
- 2nd Floor North Reading Room
- Entire 3rd Floor
- 4th Floor with the exception of the eight group study rooms
In general, the Science Library is primarily for quiet study.
University Downtown Center
- Rooms 125 E, F, G, H, J - individual study carrels; first come, first served
- Room 123 (Computer Pod) - available to students during building hours
- Room 215 - space for about 20 students

Quiet conversation in study groups is acceptable as long as it doesn’t bother other library users. Please bear in mind that group-study rooms are not soundproof. Groups of two or more have priority for use of the rooms. An individual using a group room may be asked to relinquish it for a group's use.
Bartle Library
- 4th floor Group Study Rooms: Eight Group Study Rooms are available on the 4th Floor. Four are located in the corners of the floor and four are located in the center of the floor. These are available on a first come, first serve basis. Those using these rooms should ensure they do not disturb students studying in adjacent areas.
- Newcomb Reading Room: Group study space is available in the space to your left and in the room to your immediate right as you enter the Reading Room.
The Science Library has a group study room on the ground floor.
University Downtown Center has four group study rooms on the main floor: 124 A-D
