Head of Library Technology
Binghamton University Libraries seek an enthusiastic, collegial, service-oriented and dynamic Head of Library Technology who will provide leadership for information technologies and digital initiatives and overall direction, administration and management of computer resources, systems, and networking in the Libraries. The Head of Library Technology reports to the Associate Director of University Libraries, participates in the Libraries’ strategic planning activities, and serves on the senior administrative team that provides overall direction for the Libraries in fulfilling the research, teaching, and service mission of the University.
Responsibilities
- Develop and administer a comprehensive technology plan that is integrated with the Libraries’ strategic plan; recommend policies; plan upgrades; be responsible for the Libraries' ILS (Ex Libris ALEPH) and other production systems (e.g. ILLiad);
- Work with the Library faculty and staff to research and develop new and innovative technologies and services; serve as lead on information technology-related projects;
- Maintain current awareness of digital library technologies; monitor technological developments and effective practices in the field via professional literature, vendor contacts, and communication with other libraries;
- Oversee the Libraries’ technology infrastructure, IT support, web services, and other information access and production technologies; supervise four Specialists in the Library Systems Department;
- Serve as liaison to the University’s Information Technology Services Department;
- Represent the Libraries through participation in local, regional, and national cooperative, outreach, and professional activities; serve on University Committees and SUNY-wide initiatives.
Librarians at Binghamton University are members of the faculty and are expected to contribute significantly to the profession as well as to perform their specific duties.
Qualifications
ALA-accredited master’s degree in Information Technology or related field and demonstrated Information Technology experience in an academic or research library required.Significant management experience including evidence of successful personnel supervision. Working knowledge/experience with integrated library systems, operating systems, best practices, standards, and trends in the application of technology in libraries. Demonstrated commitment to user-centered service. Demonstrated ability to shape vision and goals for the department and to relate them to library and university goals. Demonstrated ability to think critically and analytically; strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work in a collegial and collaborative environment.

Glenn G. Bartle Library houses collections in the fine arts, humanities, social sciences, and mathematical and computer sciences as well as special collections and the university archives. The Science Library contains materials in the fields of science, engineering, nursing and psychology. The University Downtown Center Library serves the College of Community and Public Affairs which includes the Department of Social Work, the Department of Human Development, and the Department of Public Administration. The Library Annex@Conklin currently houses important older, but lesser used materials in a high-density, climate controlled environment.
The University Libraries are highly automated. We have Information Commons facilities in three library locations offering 250 workstations with access to online research materials, productivity software, and scanning/video editing capabilities. In addition to our electronic and networked resources, we provide other web-accessible services and discovery technologies such as Innovative Interfaces Encore discovery services platform and the Grokker visual search technology by Groxis. The Libraries’ are wireless throughout and we have a successful library laptop lending program.

This is a tenure track position with competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience plus excellent benefits including TIAA/CREF. Finalists invited for an interview will be asked to demonstrate communication skills and knowledge of trends in library technology through a presentation to library faculty, staff, and other members of the University community.
