Services for Faculty
Borrowing Privileges
The Libraries provide generous borrowing privileges for faculty. As a faculty member at Binghamton University, you are also able to take advantage of reciprocal borrowing services that allow you to use other institutional collections with certain limitations.- SUNY Open Access - This program allows faculty members (and students) from SUNY schools to obtain borrowing privileges from other SUNY campuses with presentation of a valid institutional ID. Borrowing privileges and restrictions are set by the host institution.
- Research Libraries Group - As faculty at an RLG member library, you can obtain on-site access to other RLG libraries upon presentation of your BU faculty ID. Most institutions provide access to their collections, but exact privileges may vary from library to library. We recommend calling the destination library before you visit.
- New York State Library (NYSL) Borrower's Card - This card allows you to borrow items from the New York State Library and to access a number of research databases.
Course Reserves
Faculty and teaching assistants may place books, articles, or other items on reserve for specific courses at the Bartle, Science or UDC Libraries. Physical items may be checked out at the Reader Services Desk in the Bartle Library, the Science Library Information Services Desk or the UDC Library/Information Commons Service Desk. Articles, whenever possible, are scanned and placed in BlackBoard by the Libraries.
See Course Reserves for more information and request forms.
Instructional Services
Librarians can collaborate with you and your graduate Teaching Assistants (TAs) in support of the teaching mission of the University. Our instructional services include:- Course-specific and general library sessions customized to meet your course goals and student needs. Librarians can assist with designing effective library assignments. Most sessions are offered in the Bartle or Science Library computer instruction labs which allow hands-on active learning.
- Personal research consultations for individuals or small groups of students, faculty or staff.
- Creation of web tutorials demonstrating how to use various types of information resources and library services.
More information is available from our Instructional Services for Faculty page.
Interlibrary Loan - ILLiad
Our ILIiad service expands the range of research materials available for scholarship and teaching. Materials not owned by the University Libraries may be obtained from other state, national or international libraries. We deliver articles electronically and allow you to track the progress of your ILL requests online. Emails notify you when ILL items are available. Your PODs username and password is required to sign on to ILLiad. Binghamton University is a member of the following networks, which allow us to borrow materials from a wide range of libraries and research collections.
- OCLC - Holdings by OCLC member libraries are available in WorldCat, which can be found in metaLINK
- Center for Research Libraries (CRL) - For more information about the specialized collections available to CRL member libraries, please see the Collection Search page. The CRL Catalog is available online.
Off Campus Access to the Libraries’ Electronic Resources
Much of the information on the library website is accessible off campus without any special login. However, to get full access to electronic research materials you need to authenticate using your PODs username and password. More details are available on the Libraries’ Technical Help page.
Proxy Borrowing
To facilitate your research, the Libraries allow you to designate your Research or Teaching Assistant as your proxy borrower. This allows them to check books and materials out of the Libraries on your behalf.
To set up proxy borrowing, stop by the Bartle Library Circulation Desk, Science Library Information Services Desk or the UDC Library/Information Commons Service Desk to fill out the form. Your Research or Teaching Assistant can also pick up the form.
Research and Data Services
In addition to the support provided by your subject librarian, research assistance is available at the Bartle Library Information Commons/Reference Desk, the Science Library Information Services Desk and the UDC Library/Information Commons Service Desk. For more information about how to contact us, please visit the Ask a Librarian page.
The Libraries maintain memberships in a number of data-related consortia, including the New York State Data Center Program, the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), and the European Consortium of Political Research. More information about numeric data services is available on the Social Science Data page.
Subject Librarians
The subject librarians provide a range of services focusing on a particular area or discipline. They (1) serve as liaisons between the Libraries and one or more of the University's academic departments, programs, or schools, (2) initiate the selection and acquisition of materials for the collections, (3) provide subject-specific instruction in the use of information resources, and (4) provide general reference service and specialized research consultation.
Subject Resources
The subject resources pages are created and updated by subject librarians in support of instructional and research programs. They include links to databases and indexes, electronic journals, and selected Internet resources.
