Spanish/Hispanic Literature

The printed materials listed here are all owned by the Binghamton University Libraries and the BU call number is provided. Please note that they represent just a very small sampling of the resources that are actually available. Researchers can locate other relevant materials by using the Libraries' online catalog. See the "Finding Books" section of Research Basics for tips on using the catalog.

Short Answers, Introductions, & Overviews

The following resources contain articles on authors, works, movements, etc, and often include brief bibliographies, i.e., a list of other materials, at the end of each entry: Examples include:

Diccionario de literatura española e hispanoamericana. Alianza, 1993. REF PQ 6006 D54 1993
Dictionary of the literature of the Iberian Peninsula. Greenwood, 1993. REF PN 849 S6 D54 1993

And, the Literature Resource Center database is the electronic version of such print standbys as Contemporary Authors, Contemporary Literary Criticism, and the many volumes of the Dictionary of Literary Biography. The coverage of foreign language literature is adequate, especially for older works and prolific authors.

And the same people who produce the Literature Resource Center have a free site where you can find definitions of literary terms.

There is also a printed resource for Spanish literary terms:

Diccionario de términos literarios. Alianza, 1999. PN 44.5 E83 1999

Research Guides

Research guides usually provide a detailed introduction to the entire field, summarizing the major time periods, genres, authors, movements, etc., and they also include bibliographies, that is, lists of major scholarship, both books and journal articles, for the field. This category includes mostly printed resources.
