"Clicquez" Ici: French/Francophone Gateways

Web Tips

The Internet is a massive collection of sites that vary greatly in quality. Try to approach web resources with a critical mind to make sure the information it contains is accurate. The Libraries have developed some useful guidelines for evaluating internet resources. Issues of authority and currency are of primary importance. That is, who is responsible for the site? Is someone claiming authorship and what credentials does this person have? Is the site updated regularly? When was the last update? And so on.

Search Engines

You can link to several popular search engines via the Libraries' web site.

But you may also want to try a French-language search engine.

Note that the "Advanced Search" options on most engines have searching tips or help options.

Gateway Sites

You can go through these sites to get to many others, hence the "gateway" designation

ClicNet
From Swarthmore College. An excellent starting point, but note that its links are not highlighted. Click whenever the "pointing hand" icon appears.

Resources Internet Francophones
From CUNY's Lehman College focuses on all French-speaking areas of the world. The resources are organized by region, including Africa, the Caribbean, Louisiana and Quebec.

Tennessee Bob's Famous French Links
Sounds like a fast-food place but it is a very extensive listing of sites done by an academic -- worth exploring.

iLoveLanguages French section
Llists 70+ sites, covering, for example, dictionaries, grammars, online courses, online electronic texts and media.

Ressources en français langue seconde
A page by Alysse Weinberg at the University of Ottawa's Second Language Institute. It's really a gateway site, with links to many other types of sites, including a good listing of news and discussion groups.
