Finding Nursing Resources in metaLINK

There are five primary tabs in metaLINK: QuickSearch, Find Database, Find e-Journal, CrossSearch and My Account

QuickSearch

QuickSearch is a quick way to search multiple resources simultaneously for articles and books. The Health and Nursing QuickSearch searches the databases CINAHL Plus with fulltext, ScienceDirect and Medline (EBSCO).

Find Database
Find Database allows you to locate a specific database from those made available by the Libraries. There are three methods of finding databases:

Find Database by Subject

This option allows you to find databases by subject. The nursing databases are located under the subject “Life + Health Science”. To view these databases, select the “Life + Health Science” subject in the left-hand box, then select “Nursing” in the right-hand box and then click on “GO”.

metaLINK will now display a listing of all of the nursing databases (see above). If you click on a database title, you will be able to search the database in its native interface (i.e. outside of the metaLINK environment). Some databases will have a magnifying glass next to their description. These databases are searchable in metaLINK if you click on the magnifying glass.

Find Database by Title
This options allows you to find a specific database by its name. You can use the search box to find the database or click on the letter of the alphabet the database starts with.

Find Database by Title
This option allows you to find a database by title, vendor, subject, keyword or content type.

Find e-Journal
The find e-Journal tab takes you to a library webpage that allows you to search for e-journals by title or by subject.

CrossSearch

Cross searching (or cross-database searching) means to submit a query to numerous databases at once. The query is broadcast to each database, and a combined result list is displayed according to the results' relevancy rank. In addition, you can choose a specific database and see the results from that database. CrossSearch provides complete control over which databases are searched and offers a variety of options for viewing the results in these databases.

CrossSearch is defaulted to search the QuickSets. To CrossSearch nursing databases selected “subjects” from the first drop down box and “Life and Health” Sciences from the second drop down box. Under “Subcategories” you will see a list of “Life and Health” subcategories, select nursing.

You are able to search up to 10 databases at once in CrossSearch. The databases that are searchable have a box next to their name. Select the databases you want to search, enter your topic into the search box and click GO.

CrossSearch will produce a list of results. You have the option of viewing results of a specific database or combined results (i.e. results of all the databases combined).

My Account
As you conduct searches in metaLINK you can add records to your e-shelf in My Account by using the shopping cart that appears next to results. When you’re ready to view your records, click on My Account.

Select the records you want to save or email and then click on “Save/E-mail Selected”. A box will open giving you the option to save or send the records. If you want to save the results to your computer, it is recommend that you save the files as a .doc or .txt files.
