French Colonial Perspectives on Latin America & the Caribbean
Selections from the William J. Haggerty Collection of French Colonial History, Binghamton University Libraries
Binghamton University Libraries are home to the William J. Haggerty Collection of French Colonial History, a collection of books, pamphlets, and microfilm from the library of the Comité Central Français pour l'Outre-Mer. While the collection is most noted for its holdings on the French colonial presence in Africa and Asia, there remains quite a substantial collection of materials about Latin America and the Caribbean.
This bibliography, compiled by Martha Kelehan, Area Studies Librarian for Africana, Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Binghamton University, seeks to highlight the unique perspective on French colonialism one receives by studying the Haggerty Collection's materials on Latin America and the Caribbean. Books on the former and current French colonies in the Americas, including Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, make up the bulk of this bibliography, but nearly all the major Latin American countries are represented in this collection. Like the rest of the Haggerty Collection, the majority of the materials date to the period between the mid-19th century and the mid-20th century and are chiefly in French.
