DEMOGRAPHICS

Bureau of the Census - The Census Bureau is the best source for demographic and related data. Starting with Census 2000, most information released by the Census Bureau is in online form. Most data from the 1990 Census is also online.

NOTE: Some Census 2000 data may not have been released yet, so for some data sets the most recent information will be from the 1990 Census. To find out more about the release schedule, see the Census 2000 Gateway.

American FactFinder
Community Profiles are predefined profiles that provide community information for the geographic area that you specify. You choose a specific geographic area by selecting it from a list, searching for the area by name (a specific city, county, etc.), or clicking on a map. You then select the profile you want to see. Once you select a profile and a geographic area, you can create and print the profile.

This is the primary source for summaries of U.S statistics on all topics, released annually. The print version is the most user-friendly.

Current Population Reports (Gov Docs. C 3.186/2 through 27 and Docs. C 3.186:P)
Published on a periodic or irregular basis by the Census Bureau. These reports contain up-to-date statistics on population counts, characteristics and other special studies. Use the Subject Index below to identify reports on groups or topics of interest, e.g., Children & Youth, Older Population, Health & Disability.

Weekly listing of all deaths for 121 selected surveillance cities, notifiable diseases for the nation and states, and an annual summary. (Binghamton is not a surveillance city)

ChildStats.gov - Federal and state reports and statistics, including the annual report, America's Children: Key National Indicators of Children's Well-Being.

State Heath Facts (Kaiser Family Foundation) - Provides a variety of statistical snapshots of each state by topic, such as Medicaid figures, heath costs and budges, figures concerning women's heath, and more.

U.S. Department of Labor - Statistics - Statistics related to unemployment, wages, etc.

VITAL STATISTICS

Vital Statistics of the United States (Gov. Docs. HE 20.6210:)
Vol.1 Natality, Vol.2 Mortality, Vol. 3 Marriage and Divorce

Issued yearly since 1937, these volumes contain complete data on births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages and divorces in the United States for national, state, county, and municipality levels. It uses the International Classification of Diseases for causes of deaths. This series tends to be slow to publish - for more recent information see the Monthly Vital Statistics Reports.

Monthly Vital Statistics Reports (vol. 43- vol. 46) Docs. HE 20.6217 (microfiche)
Monthly and cumulative data on births, deaths, marriages, and divorces, and infant deaths for States and the United States are presented with brief analyses of the vital statistics. This report has been renamed the National Vital Statistics Reports effective with Vol. 47, No. 1.

New York State Statistical Yearbook (Bartle REF HA 544 .A2, older issues held in Reference)
The most complete compendium of statistics about New York State. Two sections of particular interest: Population and Vital Statistics, and Health and Human services
