Standards and Specifications

Standards are documented agreements containing technical specifications or other precise criteria to be used consistently as rules, guidelines, or definitions of characteristics, to ensure that materials, products, processes and services are fit for their purpose. -- definition from the International Organization for Standardization

Issuing Bodies for Standards and Specifications

American National Standards Institute (ANSI) - ANSI oversees the creation, promulgation and use of thousands of standards and guidelines. Online catalog with ordering information is available.

American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) - ASTM International is "one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world-a trusted source for technical standards for materials, products, systems, and services." Online catalog with ordering information is available. ASTM standards can also be found in print in the Science Library Reference Collection (see below).

American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) - ASME provides mechanical and multidisciplinary engineering codes, standards, conformity assessment programs, and related products and services. Online catalog with ordering information is available.

Defense Standardization Program (DSP)- DSP includes Department of Defense or federal specifications or standards, military specifications, standards, and handbooks, commercial item descriptions, qualified product lists, qualified manufacturers lists, guide specifications, Joint Service Specification Guides, data item descriptions, and other documents. A service of the Department of Defense.

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards (IEEE) - IEEE Online Catalog features over 800 standards products in Print and PDF formats from over 50 technical disciplines. Online catalog with ordering information is available.

International Organization for Standardization (ISO) - ISO has developed over 17,000 International Standards on a variety of subjects from a full range of technical fields. The ISO online catalog (with ordering information) can be browsed to find bibliographic information on each standard and, in many cases, a brief abstract.

International Telecommunications Union - Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) - The function of ITU-T is to provide global telecommunication standards by studying technical, operating and tariff questions. The main products of ITU-T are recommendations and are available for free. Online catalog is available.

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) - NIST conducts and supports scientific and engineering research in disciplines ranging from chemistry and physics to information technology. NIST research tools include measurement methods, standards, data, and various technologies. Standards and measurement resources are available online.

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) - SAE International maintains over 8,300 technical standards and related documents. Online catalog with ordering information is available.

Document Center Inc - A hard copy document delivery service providing standards, specification, and technical publication from industry organizations, including ANSI, ISO, SAE, IEEE, ASTM, DoD, ASME and other standards organizations.

Global Engineering Documents - A comprehensive source of historical and new technical industry, government and military standards from many issuing bodies worldwide. Standards can be ordered for electronic PDF download.

ILI Standards Infobase - A vendor specializing in international and European standards. Ordering requires registration.

NSSN: National Resource for Global Standards - An integrated catalog of more than 300,000 standards from a wide range of developers, including organizations accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), other U.S. private sector standards bodies, government agencies and international organizations. Ordering information is included.

Techstreet - Techstreet, division of Thomson Scientific, is a searchable catalog of industry standards, focusing on aerospace, aviation, engineering, construction, vessels, energy, information technology, manufacturing, medical, and other industrial practices. ASTM Annual Book of Standards - Location: Science Library Reference - TA401.A653 2002 (15 sections)
A major compilation of voluntary standards. Contains standards, specifications, terminology, and test methods. Provides complete text of standards. Each volume indexed separately; also has an overall index volume. Information on individual standards can also be searched for on the ASTM web site.

Metallic Materials Specifications Handbook - Location: Science Library Reference -TA459.R65 1992
Used to identify the chemical constituents of a specification applied to a metal or alloy or to obtain a specification for a material for which properties have been identified.

McGraw-Hill Machining and Metalworking Handbook, 2nd edition - Location: Science Library Reference - TJ1185.W35 1999
Provides data from ANSI, SAE, ASTM, ASME, and other American standards.

National Electrical Code - Location: Science Library Reference -TK3275.N328 2008
Outlines safe practices for installing and inspecting electrical wiring. Approved by ANSI and the National Fire Protection Association.
