Where to Find Films
If you are looking for films that are not available in the local video stores, try the following resources.
- Use the online Library Catalog for the Binghamton University Libraries to see if the library owns a film, DVD, or video. (Click on Library Catalog) from the Libraries' homepage. If you are looking for a specific film, do a simple title search. You can also do a search by treating the director's name as an author. If you wish to look for films on particular subjects or in specific genres, click on Advanced Search. Once in the Advanced Search screen, put your keywords in the boxes. Then, scroll down to the bottom of the screen and select Visual Materials from the Format pull-down menu. Videos and DVDs are kept at the Bartle Library Reserves Desk and can be checked out for a week.
- Broome County Public Library also carries videos.
- DocuSeek Film and Video Finder This is a search site for independent documentary, social issue, and educational videos available in the U.S. and Canada. This is a good source for instructional videos for the classroom.
- Facets This is one of the best sites for classic, foreign language, documentary, experimental, performance and other hard to find films. Facets both rents and sells DVDs and videos.
- Film Finder This is the web site for the Educational Communications Center here on campus. The ECC is located in Lecture Hall B-60 and provides videos for students to view or use in their classes. In addition to the ECC's own video collection, their site includes links to other major resources for film and video. The Docuseek and Educational & Commercial Film Libraries links are especially useful.
- The Four County Library System catalog covers the holdings of public libraries of the four nearest counties. (Does not cover, however, the holdings of Broome County Public Library.)
- WorldCat
This database
covers the holdings of academic and large public libraries, primarily in the
United States. It can be used to find specific titles, or to discover videos/DVDs
on a particular topic. To search, put the topic or title in the box(es) and
limit the search to Visual Materials. The materials can then be obtained
via Interlibrary Loan. Be aware that many libraries do not loan out videos
and that even when they do, the Interlibrary Loan process may take 2-3 weeks.
