Resources for Economists on the Internet
As the title implies, this is a detailed listing of economic resources available via the web. Click on Data to pull up a wide variety of statistical sites.

Statistical Abstract of the United States
This is a detailed compilation of (primarily) U.S. statistics. It covers population, employment, government expenditures, income, etc. For historical statistics, try the Mini Historical Statistics section. The current print edition is kept at the Bartle Reference Desk. Older editions are at Ref HA 206 .S8

Statistical Universe BU Only
This is an index to over 100,000 publications, including those from the U.S government and states, other countries, and national and international organizations.

BLS Home Page
Homepage for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Click on Get Detailed Statistics for historical data.

Bureau of Economic Analysis
Covers U.S. economic accounts on an international, national, regional, and industry level. BEA tutorial

Census Bureau Economic Information
Economic data on agriculture, retail and wholesale trade, international trade, manufacturing, and more.

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services--Health Accounts
Contains historical data for Medicare and Medicaid expenditures. Some historical files are "zipped".

EconData (INFORUM)
University of Maryland website that provides access to several hundred thousand economic time series. Series include national income and product accounts (NIPA), labor statistics, price indices, current business indicators, industrial production, information on states and regions, as well as international data. Data is at the U.S.national, state/local and international levels.

EconData.Net
Not to be confused with EconData above, this site specializes in U.S. regional socioeconomic data.

Economic Data: FRED I
FRED (Federal Reserve Economic Data) provides historical US economic and financial data, including daily US interest rates, monetary and business indicators, exchange rates, etc.

Economic Report of the President
The entire report from the years 1995 onwards and the statistical section from 1995 onwards can be viewed or downloaded from this site. Contains historical statistics on employment, GDP, CPI, etc.

Economic Statistics Briefing Room
Provides easy access to current federal economic indicators.

Energy Information Administration
Official energy statistics from the United States government.

NABE: National Association for Business Economics
This site has a collection of useful data links. Click on Economic Links.

New York State Data Center
Provides access to the various statistical series for and about New York State's economy and population. Download data as spreadsheet files.

Office of Immigration Statistics
Detailed statistics on U.S. immigration.

STAT-USA BU Only
Click on State of the Nation to find statistical data on economic indicators, employment, international trade, industry, national income and product accounts, etc. Some statistics updated daily or weekly.

TransStats
This is the website for the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. This is where statistics on commuting time to work, airline travel, and automotive vs. public transportation can be found.

International Statistics

China Data Online
Provides access to monthly and annual macroeconomic statistics, monthly reports on economic development, city and county data, and industrial sector data. This is a single user only database. Searching of the statistical databases is allowed, but not the yearbooks or census data. It can only be used in the library. Go to the Bartle Reference Information Commons desk to get the password.

Human Development Report
Click on HD Reports to access the online version of the various Global, Regional, and National Reports.

International Energy Agency
Has international statistics for coal, oil, etc.

International Financial Statistics Online BU Only
Statistics on all aspects of domestic and international finance from 200+ IMF countries. Contains approximately 32,000 time series of financial and economic data. International and domestic finance statistics for most countries of the world. Financial data includes exchange rates, international liquidity, money and banking, etc. International Financial Statistics tutorial

Japan Statistical Yearbook
Comprehensive summary of basic statistical information, covering demographics, land, economics, society, and culture. Files are available in both PDF and Excel format.

OECD Social Indicators
This OECD site provides time series coverage of social indicators for OECD countries in the following areas: general context, self-sufficiency, equity, health, and social cohesion. Also available in print at call number HN 25.S646.

World Bank Africa Database (CD-ROM)
Over 1,200 indicators of macro-economic, sectoral, and social data for 53 African countries and 20 regional country groups going back to 1970. It can be accessed on the Statistical Workstation in the Online & Data Services Office. The disk can be obtained from the Bartle Reference Desk, call number HC800.A1 W677.

World Development Indicators (CD-ROM)
Contains over 550 time-series indicators for 208 countries and 18 country groups, covering 1960 to 2002. It can be accessed on the Census Workstation in the Online & Data Services Office.

Company Financial Statistics

Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS)
WRDS is the interface used to access the Compustat, CRSP, Global Insight, and other large financial and economic data files. Most data is for the U.S., but the Penn World Tables files provide some international information. Use of these files requires registration and is strictly restricted to Binghamton University faculty and students. For a complete list of files available via WRDS, click on the link above.
Compustat is a database of financial, statistical, and market information. It provides more than 340 annual and 120 quarterly Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Flow of Funds, and supplemental data items on more than 10,000 active and 9,700 inactive companies. For most companies, data is available for a maximum of 20 years and 48 quarters.
CRSP contains historical U.S. information for stock indices and prices, bonds, and mutual fund securities.
Compustat and CRSP are normally used for large-scale graduate or faculty research projects, rather than for information on a small number of companies.

Datastream provides historical coverage of major securities from worldwide markets, economic data, interest rates, exchange rates, bonds, etc. It can be accessed via the Census workstation which is located in the Online and Data Services Office off of the Bartle Library Reference area.

Factiva
Use the Companies/Markets button to access recent historical data on stock prices, currencies, mutual funds, and market indices.

Thomson Research B.U. Only
Covers 10Ks, 10Qs, annual reports, proxies, etc. for U.S. companies and international companies on U.S. stock exchanges. Has nice, one page overviews under Company Tearsheet, Financial Tearsheet, Company Brief, and Company Profile. To search, type a company name or ticker in the box. Note that reports for international companies are called 20F rather than 10K.
