Biographical Note

DANIEL S. DICKINSON

1800, September 11 Born in Goshen, Connecticut.
1806 Family moved to Guilford, N.Y., in Chenango County, where he attended common school.
1820-25 Teacher in common and select schools. Studied in the law offices of Clark and Knapp.
1822 Married Lydia Knapp.
1828-31 Admitted to the practice of law. Served as Postmaster of Guilford.
1831 Moved to Binghamton, New York.
1834 Elected President of the Village of Binghamton. Served as Delegate to Democratic National Convention.
1837-40 Served in the New York State Senate.
1842 Elected Lt. Governor of New York State.
1844, December 1 Appointed to the U.S. Senate to replace Senator Talmadge, who resigned.
1844-51 Served continuously in the U.S. Senate.
1852 Delegate to Democratic Convention, Baltimore, March 1852. Supported General Cass for President. Made famous statement, “I'd rather be right than be President.”
1852 Returned to the practice of law in Binghamton. Served as U.S. District Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
1861-63 Served as New York State Attorney General.
1864-66 Returned to office of U.S. District Attorney.
1866, April 12 Died in New York City.
1924, May 30 Statue dedicated in his honor at Broome County Court House, Binghamton, New York.
