NSF Data Management Plans

Beginning January 18, 2011, the National Science Foundation will require all funding proposals include a Data Management Plan to address sharing and availability of data generated from the proposed research.

Grant Proposal Guide (GPG) Chapter II.C.2.j has the full policy implementation.

Requirements, instructions and advice for PIs are available for specific Directorates, Offices, Divisions and Programs.

Some things to think about in creating your data management plan:

  • can your data be shared through existing discipline-based preprint and/or data sites?
  • can you identify sites to share your data?
  • what is the best way to manage your data long-term?
  • are there reasons data cannot be publicly shared (i.e., due to confidentiality of research subjects)?
  • will journal publications require links to your research data?
