Books
The Science Library houses science books in the fields of Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering/Technology Environmental Sciences, Geology, Nursing and Psychology, Physics. Click here for specific information on call numbers and book locations.
Some older library books and journals have been moved to the Library Annex, an off campus storage facility. Books in storage have the location STORAGE STACKS-PLACE A REQUEST in the library catalog. Patrons can request that material stored in the Library Annex be retrieved and delivered to the Science Library.
BUC$ Card Management Center Machine
A BUC$ machine is located opposite the Computer Room on the main floor. You can use this machine to add money to your BUC$ account, check your BUC$ account balance or purchase a non- patron card.
Computers
Computer workstations, located primarily on the main floor, provide access to library resources and have the following software installed: Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Phototeditor, Mathematica and Grokker. There are dataports for laptop use throughout the library and wireless computing is also available.
Information Services Desk
Students, Staff and Faculty are encouraged to make this their first stop when making enquiries about resources and services offered by the library.
At the Information Services Desk you can:
- Get help on how to borrow and return books, place holds or recalls, and request non-electronic course reserve material.
- Get help using infoLINK library catalog to locate books, journals, DVDs and more.
- Get help using metaLINK to locate articles and electronic resources.
- Get help finding and evaluating information sources for your studies, research or teaching.
The Information Services Desk is located on the Main floor of the Science Library and is staffed all times the Library is open. You can contact the Information Services Desk at 777-2166.
Journals
Print Journals : Current print journals are displayed by subject and are located to the right as you enter the library on the main floor. Bound journal titles beginning with the letters A through E are located on the main floor of the library while journals whose titles begin with the letters F through Z are located on the second floor. Some older science journals may be located in room G12 or may have been moved to the Library Annex.
Electronic Journals: To access electronic journals, click on the E-Journal link on the library homepage. You can search specific journal titles or browse for journals by subject.
Map Room
The Map Room is located on the ground floor of the Science Library in Room G-02. C ollections are accessible Monday to Thursday, 8:00 am – 12 am and Friday, 8 am - 8 pm. On weekends, please inquire at the Information Services Desk on the main floor. The collections include topographic and thematic maps, charts, atlases, soil surveys, geological publications, globes, gazeteers, and other cartographic reference materials.
The Map Room provides table space for individuals and groups to consult maps and atlases. It is also equipped with a light table and a drafting table. A computer is available to access the BU Libraries catalog and databases. Maps and atlases are to be used in the Library.
Microfilm and Microfiche Equipment
Equipment for reading and for making copies is in the room next to the Photocopy Room on the main floor.
New Books Display and Newspapers
New books and current newspapers are located on shelves to the right of the library entrance.
Photocopying and Printing
Self-service photocopiers are located in the room to the right of the rest rooms on the main floor and on the second floor. There is a photocopier for departmental cards near the Photocopy Room. Color photocopies are available by request. BUC$ cards may be used with the photocopiers. There is a public printer on the main floor. You need a BUC$ card to print.
Reference Collection
The Reference Collection, located on the first floor, contains fact books, manuals, standards, encyclopedias, dictionaries and writing guides, etc. These materials are helpful for background research and to provide supporting information.
Science Library Blog
The blog provides library news, including recent book acquisitions, changes to journal subscriptions and new electronic resources. The blog also highlights science news stories and developments in scholarly research. You can subscribe to the latest headlines from the Science Library Blog using an RSS feed.
