Research Fellows: Circulation/Reference Librarian - Felipe Herrera Library, Inter-American Development Bank - Washington, DC
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is interested in hiring a librarian to work at the circulation/reference desk to provide services to the bank's staff at headquarters and its country offices. ACTIVITIES:Provide research services to Bank staff in order to identify relevant work-related materials and to answer questions. Participate in the implementation of library user surveys, facilitation of focus groups and application of other usage assessment tools. Research available pertinent new tools and make recommendations regarding their application to the FHL; propose/recommend the development of new services to address specific users' needs. Perform collection development and bibliographic control duties for the Library's international organizations and government statistical collections, reference collection and user's input and suggestions. Identify and evaluate new subject content and reference tools for the Library's website related to economic and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean. Manage the circulation module of the Library. Manage interlibrary loan services utilizing OCLC/ILLiad systems. Provide resource-sharing services to libraries worldwide. Manage a diverse portfolio of document delivery suppliers and services for rapid provision of publications. Maximize system features to maintain integrity of records and to regularly produce reports and statistics. Evaluate the performance of systems used at the reference desk. Provide informal/personalized instruction and scheduled training on the use of data-based accessed by the Library to Bank staff. Contribute to marketing the Library through formal training and promotional activities as well as participate in feeding and maintaining the Library's user profiles. PERIOD: July 1, 2008 through July 1, 2009. REQUIREMENTS AND ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Education: Masters degree in Library/Information Science from an American Library Association accredited institution/ Licenciatura en Bibliotecologia y Documentacion from an accredited Latin American institution. Experience: Minimum of 2 years experience in an academic or research library using online systems for circulation, interlibrary loan services, or cataloging. Languages: Proficiency in English and Spanish (reading, writing and speaking) required. Desired: Knowledge (reading and/or writing and speaking) of French and/or Portuguese. Personal and Teamwork skills: Ability to interact effectively with staff, constituencies and the general public. Detailed organizational skills, capacity to work well in both a team and a self-directed environment. Initiative to suggest and introduce fresh tools and services. Personal interest in professional development and desire to keep up with new developments in the field. SELECTION CRITERIA: Candidates who meet the educational, experience and languages requirements will be evaluated on the extent to which they possess the following skills, knowledge and abilities required for the optimal performance of this position's functions:a) Recent, successful experience in provision of library services to a diverse clientele; b) Knowledge of and experience with an integrated library system (ILS) and an online interlibrary loan cooperative system such as OCLC. c) Knowledge on subjects of social and economic development of Latin America and the Caribbean; d) Creative, innovative and open to change. e) Proven ability to work effectively with competing priorities, under pressure of deadlines, and within a collaborative teamwork setting; f) Commitment to service orientation; g) Understanding of a multicultural and multidisciplinary culture. RESTRICTIONS AND EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS: The post of duty is the Bank's headquarters in Washington, DC (i) Applicants must have recently graduated (no more than three years) from an accredited university (ii) Applicants cannot be a previous participant of this program. (iii) Applicants must be a citizen of one of the IDB member countries. (iv) Applicants whose family members or close relatives are presently employed or in the process of becoming IDB employees are not eligible (this restriction applies to candidates within and including the 4th degree of consanguinity and the 2nd degree of affinity). Appointments for Research Fellows are for one year with the possibility of renewal for up to one additional year. In no case shall a selected candidate participate in the program for a period greater than two years. Appointments to consultant jobs thereafter may be made only after a minimum time-lapse of three (3) months from the expiration date of the last contract as a Research Fellow. The Bank determines the salary to be paid to the Research Fellows according to the regulations and criteria of its internal salary administration. In the case of foreign candidates the Bank could request a G (IV) visa before the American Consulate in their country of origin. If the finalist candidate is unable to obtain the visa, the offer of employment will be voided. Participation in this program does not disqualify Candidate to apply to the Junior Professional program or any other employment positions in the Bank. The Department of Anthropology, Smithsonian Institution seeks a contract archivist to process the Records of the Handbook of North American Indians (1973-2008), located in the National Museum of Natural History, Washington, DC. The Handbook of North American Indians is a multi-volume encyclopedia summarizing current scholarly knowledge about the prehistory, history, and cultures of the aboriginal peoples of North American who have lived north of the urban civilizations of central Mexico. Target date for commencement of work will be the end of May and processing and related work will not exceed nine (9) months from the start date. Prospective contractors should have an ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree or be in the final stage of completing their degree. Contractors must be able to safely lift boxes weighing over 40 pounds, and to climb ladders. The work will be physically demanding. Contractors should be flexible in terms of working between at least two locations, the National Museum of Natural History (10th Street and Constitution Avenue, Washington, DC) and the Smithsonian Museum Support Center (4210 Silver Hill Road, Suitland, MD).
