SALALM - Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials

12/18/07 - The Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida will offer Library Travel Research Grants for summer 2008. As many as 12 awards of up to $750 each will be made to cover travel and living expenses. Awardees are expected to remain in Gainesville for at least one week and, following their stay, submit a brief (2-3 pp.) report on how their work at UF Libraries enriched their research project and offer suggestions for possible improvements of the Latin American Collection. 12/17/07 - UT Austin's Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection has a new blog entitled "free*the*books." The blog discusses issues surrounding the digitization of parts of the Latin American Collection, as a Google Library Partner.

12/06/07 - SALALM in the Blogosphere - ALZAR and the Bibliographic Instruction wiki highlighted on Cheryl Laguardia's blog for Library Journal.

12/06/07 - More than 25 SALALM librarians and at least 11 libreros attended the Guadalajara Book Fair (FIL). Salamistas were not only seeking novedades but also active in presentations to new ALA-FIL pass attendees as well as contributing to the Salon de Libro selection of recommened titles for libraries.

11/12/07 - SALAMISTA Claudia Cuevas, Current President of the Asociación Chilena de Bibiotecarios, opened the 12th Annual Conference of Chilean Librarians (October 24-26) in Santiago. Elected in December of 2005, her term runs until April 2008.

11/07/07 - Friends of the Princeton University Library Research Grant Program - Each year, the Friends of the Princeton University Library offer short-term Library Research Grants to promote scholarly use of the research collections. These Library Research Grants, which have a value of up to $2,500 each, are meant to help defray expenses incurred in traveling to and residing in Princeton during the tenure of the grant. The length of the grant will depend on the applicant's research proposal, but is ordinarily one month. Library Research Grants awarded in this academic year are tenable from May 2008 to April 2009, and the deadline for applications is 15 January 2008. Applicants are asked to submit a completed application form (http://www.princeton.edu/rbsc/fellowships/application.pdf), budget form (http://www.princeton.edu/rbsc/fellowships/budget_rev08152006a.pdf) and a research proposal not exceeding three pages in length. Applicants must also arrange for two confidential letters of recommendation to be sent directly to the Library Research Grants Committee at the address given below. The proposal should address specifically the relevance to the proposed research of unique resources found in the Princeton University Library collections. Awards will be made before 1 April 2008. Application materials and letters of recommendation are to be mailed toLibrary Research Grant Committee, Princeton University Library, One Washington Road, Princeton, NJ 08544. Materials mailed to the committee mustbe postmarked no later than 15 January 2008. Facsimile transmissions may besent to (609) 258-2324. 10/21/07 - Collections statistics from 2005-2006 are available online. Libraries from around the world report on expenditures for Latin American Studies. The results were published in SALALM Newsletter 34:3 (December 2006), pp. 34-36.

10/10/07 - Spain's annual book fair, Liber 2007 (held in Barcelona, Oct 3-5), hosted several SALALM members from the United States and the United Kingdom. Those attending were able to visit the outdoor antiquarian book fair being held at the Paseo de Gracia. Lisbon and Madrid also witnessed book hunting excursions from eager SALALMistas not deterred by the high value of the Euro. Other cultural activities included visits to museums and an extensive tour of the Biblioteca Nacional de Catalunya organized by our very own Lluis Agusti.

10/10/07 - More than 20 SALALM members attended the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) Conference in Montreal, Canada (Sept 5-8). SALALMistas were present both as panelists and exhibitors. There were more than 1100 panels as well as 3 days of non-stop films/documentaries to chose from.

08/13/07 - New Page on Latin American Studies Special Collections - Students from the California Rare Book School August 2007 course "The History of the Book in Latin America, 16th-19th Centuries" created new resources page for Latin American Studies Special Collections. Taught by Dan Slive (William Reese Company) and David Szewczyk (The Philadelphia Rare Books and Manuscripts Company), the class explored the history of printing in the New World.

07/11/07 - SALALM 2007 Keynote Speaker Alfredo Corchado wins Columbia University Journalism Prize - The Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism today announced the 2007 winners of the Maria Moors Cabot Prize for outstanding reporting on Latin America and the Caribbean, honoring journalists who have covered the Western Hemisphere and, through their reporting and editorial work, have furthered inter-American understanding.  The 2007 winners are: Alfredo Corchado, Mexico bureau chief, the Dallas Morning News; Gary Marx, foreign correspondent, Chicago Tribune; Maria Teresa Ronderos, editorial advisor, Semana Magazine (Colombia); and Jose Vales, Latin American correspondent, El Universal (Mexico).
