What is the Information Commons?
The Information Commons is a joint venture between the Libraries and Information Technology Services that is designed to combine computer technology with the Libraries' research collections. The Information Commons in the Libraries are staffed by both ITS Help Desk students and Library staff.

How do I sign on to the computers?
You use your Binghamton email POD username and password. You can find both using BUSI.

How can I save information I find in the library on the computers?
You can use a thumb drive or the shared network space (H drive). For more infomation on the shared network space, go to the Computer Center Documentation Library, and do a keyword search for "storage." Shared network space is only available by logging on to the computers (see question above).

You can also use your Digital Drop Box in BlackBoard to save materials for short-term use.

I saved something to my H drive. How do I find it when I am on my computer in my room?
Point the browser to ftp://username@bingsuns.binghamton.edu (use your username for "username" in URL).

Once you arrive at the ftp server, you'll be prompted for your BingSuns password. Enter it and you'll get an Explorer window into which you can drag and drop or copy and paste files or directories.

Your Bingsuns pasword should be the same as your e-mail password. If that does not work, you can find your Bingsuns password using BUSI.

Can I use my PODS printing quota in the Libararies?
PODS printing quotas can be used in the Information Commons areas of the Libraries.

Can I bring in a laptop to use in the library?
Yes, there are network ports in the libraries for laptop use for registered students and staff. Wireless connection is also available in some areas - ask at the Reference or Circulation desks for more information. The Computing Services Help Desk can help you configure your laptop for Wireless connection.

Can I print using a laptop in the library?
You can configure both your personal laptop and laptops borrowed under the Libraries' Laptop Lending program to print using the PODS quota.

Ask an ITS Consultant in the Information Commons area for assistance.
