Binghamton University Libraries Ask a Librarian

How do I check out a book?

How do I know if a book is in the library?
Check infoLINK, the Library Catalog by looking for the title or author. infoLINK will also indicate if the book is on the shelf or has been checked out.

How do I find the book?
You need to get the call number from infoLink.

OK, I have the call number. Now what?
Ask the friendly people at the Reference Desk for help. Or, you can look up the call number explanations and book locations.

Do you have this book we are using for class?
We don't automatically buy all the books used in classes. To be sure, check infoLINK, because there is a chance that we will have it and it will be available.

But my professor said it was in the Library!
It could be on Reserves.

Where are your fiction books?
We do not have a separate fiction section. Check infoLink by author or title to see what we have and get a call number.

Does the library have any books online?
InfoLink will indicate if a book is available online. But most of the time you will have to use the old-fashioned paper book.

How do I check a book out?
Bring the book and your student ID to one the desks - the Circulation Desk at the main doors of the Batle Library, or the Information Services Desk in the Science Library. The Bartle and Science Libraries also have self-checkout machines located near the front doors.

How long can I borrow books for?
If you are an undergraduate student, a book will be due six weeks from the day you check it out.

What happens if I keep a book longer than six weeks?
You have the option to renew your loan, either in person or online through infoLink, unless someone else has requested to borrow the book. If you do not return or renew a book by its due date, then you can be fined, just like at a public library.

How many books can I borrow from the Library?
You really have to try to exceed this limit! Undergraduates are allowed to check out up to 100 books at one time.

For more information on checking books out, go to Circulation.
