SCOAP3 Model Proposed for Funding Particle Physics Journals

SCOAP3logo

The SCOAP3 project is an innovative new model for funding high energy physics journals. SCOAP3, the Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics, has proposed a mechanism for particle physics to pay for its own publishing costs and make articles in the field openly available to the world without cost to the reader. Rather than rely on typical journal subscriptions, in the SCOAP3 model, universities, labs, and funding agencies involved in producing particle physics literature pay into a consortium (SCOAP3). The consortium then pays publishers to publish their journals openly on the web.

Nobel Prize winners' research articles freely available from IOP

IOP Publishing has made selected articles from this year's Nobel Prize winners in chemistry and physics available at no charge on the web. More details are below.
From the IOP website:
http://www.iop.org/EJ/news/-topic=1257

The 2007 Nobel Prize for Physics has been awarded to both Albert Fert (Université Paris-Sud, Orsay, France) and Peter Grünberg (Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany) for their independent work on Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR). The work carried out by Fert and Grünberg has revolutionised and influenced the path for modern technology, making storage devices such as MP3 players and laptops become smaller in weight and appearance yet larger in storage capacity each year.

The 2007 Nobel Prize for Chemistry has been awarded to Gerhard Ertl (Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft Berlin, Germany) for his experimental investigations into the various effects of reactions taking place on surfaces.

Fert, Grunberg and Ertl have all published work within a range of IOP journals including Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter and Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics as well as in the partner journals: Europhysics Letters (EPL) and New Journal of Physics. As a service to the community, we are pleased to make the papers relevant to their prize freely available until the end of 2007:

Search pages available for science/engineering book series

We have created a search page for book series in science and engineering. This search page enables you to to input the volume number from a citation for a book series and retrieve the record for the individual volume in our library catalog, infoLINK.

These search pages are linked from the following subject resources pages: biology, chemistry, computer science, electrical & computer engineering, engineering, environmental studies, geology, mathematical sciences, physics & astronomy, and psychology.

To see an example, go to http://library.lib.binghamton.edu/subjects/biology/bioseries.html and input a volume number for Methods in Enzymology e.g. 191.

RSS Feeds available for American Physical Society Journals

The American Physical Society (APS) is now providing content awareness using Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds as a convenience to our readers. Journal feeds contain recently published articles in each journal and are updated as new articles are published. A list of all available feeds along with a FAQ can be found at http://feeds.aps.org/ or by following the RSS link on journal home and Scitation pages.

As the web matures, researchers, students, publishers and librarians are seeking new ways of disseminating and sharing information. Technologies such a RSS, blogs and wiki’s are being experimented with and used for sharing and establishing communities.

We, along with the American Institute of Physics (AIP), are seeking ways to improve our offerings, to support the directions in which scientists are evolving their use of the web.
