ACM Computing Reviews - New Hot Topic - Computational Intelligence in Human Genetics

Computing Reviews recently announced the release of its new Hot Topic, “The Critical Need for Computational Intelligence in Human Genetics,” written by Jason H. Moore of Dartmouth College.

This Hot Topic outlines how data mining can help identify genetic risk factors for common human diseases. In diseases such as cancer, essential hypertension, and schizophrenia, many genes and many environmental factors interact in non linear ways. To understand the enormous complexity of these interactions and isolate those responsible for a particular disease, computational intelligence is needed. Moore outlines possible approaches and foresees software that will evolve to meet the challenges of human genetics.

Hot Topics are a series of essays on emergent areas of computer science, and can only be read in the online version Computing Reviews. They include links to related web pages, articles, and books, and are updated on a regular basis. Computing Reviews is a collaboration between Reviews.com and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

Prof. Meng's Company Released News Metasearch Engine

Webscalers, a company co-founded by Computer Science Professor Weiyi Meng who serves as its President, released to the public a news metasearch engine called AllInOneNews in August 2007. AllInOneNews connects to over 1,800 news sources in more than 200 countries and regions. The ability to connect with many search engines simultaneously enables AllInOneNews to provide the timeliest information possible. AllInOneNews also performs "semantic search," meaning that it looks not only for keywords, but also for subject matter closely related to the original query.

AllInOneNews grew out of a research project sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Later, NSF's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program provided funds for Phase I and II of the project. Prof. Meng is a leading researcher in large-scale metasearch technology. A PR Newswire Item contains more information about the release.

Sun opens access to software patents

From Open Access News
By Peter Suber

Sun Microsystems is not only opening the source code for Solaris but opening access to 1,600 Solaris software patents for open-source developeprs. From yesterday's press release: 'Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced the largest single release of patent innovations into the open source community by any organization to date, marking a significant shift in the way Sun positions its intellectual property portfolio. By giving open source developers free access to Sun(TM) OpenSolaris related patents under the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL), the company is fostering open innovation and establishing a leadership role in the framework of a patent commons that will be recognized across the globe. "As the largest business contributor to the open source community, Sun has always been an ardent believer in open standards and the open source process going back to the inception of this company," said Scott McNealy, Chairman and CEO, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "The release of more than 1,600 patents associated with the Solaris(TM) OS far eclipses any other vendor's contribution. Today represents a huge milestone for Sun, for the community, for developers and for customers."' The Sun announcement follows the similar announcement from IBM earlier this month that it would open access to 500 software patents for open-source developers.
