Bartle Library Information Commons to Expand

In September 2008, finishing touches will be completed on the expansion of the Bartle Library Information Commons. Additional computers, printers, and scanners will be available in the most popular student computing facility on campus. The Bartle Library reference collection has been shifted to make room for a new arrangement of computers featuring the highly popular furniture currently used in the Bartle, Science, and UDC Commons. A walk-up computer bar, additional express printing workstations, and printer islands to improve access to student printing are part of the expansion. Additional computers and study space will be available on the 2nd floor mezzanine above the Information Commons.

Blackwell Synergy and Wiley Interscience E-journals Unavailable June 28-June 29

E-journals from Blackwell Synergy and Wiley Interscience will be unavailable the weekend of June 28-June 29. After July 1, all Blackwell Synergy journals will be available from the Wiley Interscience website and Blackwell Synergy will no longer be available. metaLINK Upgrade

metaLINK will be upgraded starting Thursday 6/12/2008 through Monday 6/16/2008. Patrons will be re-directed to our back up server until the upgrade is completed. During the upgrade period there may be brief disruptions in metaLINK availability.

RefWorks Now Available

RefWorks is an online research management, writing, and collaboration tool. You can export citations from database searches into RefWorks to add citations to papers and create bibliographies. You can also share your citations with other students, colleagues, and friends. Start by signing up for an individual account. Bartle Current Periodical, Newspaper, DVD, Video and Music CD Collections Have Moved

During Spring Break, the Bartle Current Periodicals, Newspaper, DVD, Video and Music CD Collections were moved to the Josiah T. Newcomb Reading Room, located near the Library Tower Coffee Kiosk. Listening and viewing equipment was also moved to the Newcomb Reading Room. The DVD, video, and CD collections are housed behind the Newcomb service desk with staff available for assistance. It is no longer necessary to page music CDs.

The Bartle current periodical collection was formerly located on the 2nd floor mezzanine. BU Libraries have access to over 62,000 journals, the majority of titles are available electronically and there are fewer paper issues in the collection. The 2nd floor mezzanine was not included in earlier renovations and the functionality of this space had diminished. In response to student needs, expansion of the Bartle Information Commons is in the planning process. The mezzanine area will be incorporated and there will be additional computers, laptop workspace and group seating.

The Ottoman Empire and Why It’s Important in Today’s World

Dr. Donald Quataert of the History Department will speak about the importance of the Ottoman Empire in today’s fast-paced world.

Materials from Dr. Quataert’s personal collection of artifacts will be on display in Special Collections on the second floor of the Bartle Library. A display of related materials from our Libraries’ circulating collections will be on display on the Bartle Library mezzanine.

Naxos Music Library

Naxos Music Library is the most comprehensive collection of classical music available online. The database also contains music in contemporary jazz, world music (including a specific collection of Chinese music), folk music and a small collection of pop and rock. The database offers access to over 250,000 (and growing) tracks of music to the campus community. While listening, you can read notes on the works being played as well as biographical information on composers or artists in Naxos's extensive database. Tracks in NML are *NOT* downloadable to any device.

The database is available 24/7 to the entire University community via the internet, thus greatly increasing the access to recorded music in the Libraries' collection of vinyl, tape and CD audio recordings.

Checking ID Cards During Late Night Hours in Bartle Library

A valid BU ID card is now required to access the Bartle Library upon entering during late night hours. This policy has been established to ensure the safety of Binghamton University students and to preserve the facility for its intended use. Cooperation of all library users is appreciated. Upon entering the library late at night, you will be asked by library staff to present your BU ID card.
