During Spring Break, the Bartle Current Periodicals, Newspaper, DVD, Video and Music CD Collections were moved to the Josiah T. Newcomb Reading Room, located near the Library Tower Coffee Kiosk. Listening and viewing equipment was also moved to the Newcomb Reading Room. The DVD, video, and CD collections are housed behind the Newcomb service desk with staff available for assistance. It is no longer necessary to page music CDs.

The Bartle current periodical collection was formerly located on the 2nd floor mezzanine. BU Libraries have access to over 62,000 journals, the majority of titles are available electronically and there are fewer paper issues in the collection. The 2nd floor mezzanine was not included in earlier renovations and the functionality of this space had diminished. In response to student needs, expansion of the Bartle Information Commons is in the planning process. The mezzanine area will be incorporated and there will be additional computers, laptop workspace and group seating.

Information management is an important component of critical thinking. In this workshop, we will discuss some of the common difficulties that students encounter in conducting library research in the age of Google. Working together, we will consider various techniques for creating assignments that challenge students to use their critical thinking skills to develop the best information management strategies. Additional topics will include how to encourage students:

To use library resources – both print and digital
To evaluate their sources
To be aware of the Libraries’ citation resources

The workshop, led by faculty from the University Libraries, will be held on Tuesday, January 22 from 10:30-1. Lunch will be included. Attendance is limited to 30 people. Please RSVP to Debbie Dunn at ddunn@binghamton.edu.

Desktop and laboratory computers operating as stand-alone devices outside the Computer Center will not be affected. The services that will be unavailable include:

1. The entire campus wired and wireless networks.

2. Electronic mail will be down, as will email forwarding to external mail servers.

3. Blackboard.

4. All Binghamton administrative applications (Oracle HR and Finance, Banner and CICS applications).

5. Pharos print system in Pods and Information Commons.

6. Software that requires access to a license manager (Matlab, ANSYS, Fluent, Solid Edge).

7. Kronos and the Card Access System.

8. Library on-line bibliographic resources.

9. Shared network storage devices (aka "H" drive or "S" drive).

People attempting to connect to the binghamton.edu web server will be redirected to the backup server at BCC which will contain a message explaining the situation. E-mail sent to binghamton.edu mail addresses will normally be held by the sending server. Users who anticipate critical email communications during this time should warn correspondents of the outage and may want to have alternate e-mail services for this period. When our servers are once again up, there is likely to be an extraordinary amount of mail that will have to be processed. Expect some initial delays.
