Bartle Current Periodical, Newspaper, DVD, Video and Music CD Collections Have Moved

During Spring Break, the Bartle Current Periodicals, Newspaper, DVD, Video and Music CD Collections were moved to the Josiah T. Newcomb Reading Room, located near the Library Tower Coffee Kiosk. Listening and viewing equipment was also moved to the Newcomb Reading Room. The DVD, video, and CD collections are housed behind the Newcomb service desk with staff available for assistance. It is no longer necessary to page music CDs.

The Bartle current periodical collection was formerly located on the 2nd floor mezzanine. BU Libraries have access to over 62,000 journals, the majority of titles are available electronically and there are fewer paper issues in the collection. The 2nd floor mezzanine was not included in earlier renovations and the functionality of this space had diminished. In response to student needs, expansion of the Bartle Information Commons is in the planning process. The mezzanine area will be incorporated and there will be additional computers, laptop workspace and group seating.

Impact Factors for BioMed Central Journals

BioMed Central, an open access publisher, has received Impact Factors for 37 journal titles. Nine titles that received their first Impact Factor in June 2006 placed in the top 10 of their 2005 Journal Citation Report category. Genome Biology, for example, received a first Impact Factor of 9.71, placing it in the top five of research journals in the Genetics and Heredity field. Malaria Journal, with a first Impact Factor of 2.14, is number two in the Tropical Medicine field. More information about the new Impact Factors is available here.

As of April 2005, all SUNY four-year and university and health science center campuses are enrolled as BioMed Central (BMC) members. The membership was made possible by a generous two-year grant from the Joint Labor/Management Committee made up of members of United University Professions, the Governor’s Office of Employee Relations, and a subsidy from the SUNY University and Health Science Center Libraries.

Until March 2007, SUNY faculty, researchers, and students may submit an unlimited number of research papers to any BMC journals without incurring article processing fees. Additional information on BMC can be found at the BioMed Central website. For information about Binghamton’s membership, please contact Ed Shephard, Collection Development Officer, or Alesia McManus, Head of the Science Library.

Science Library Roof Replacement Project

Starting Monday, July 24, 2006 the skylight in the Science Library will be replaced in order to repair long term leaks. This repair is part of the roof replacement project this summer. The Skylight replacement project will last approximately one month and we anticipate that it will be completed before classes begin. In the meantime, the area underneath the skylight will be inaccessible but all other areas of the Science Library remain open as usual. The main impact will be on the front stairwell, which will be closed off during part of the project, but access to the collections and other floors will be still be possible via the rear stairwell. The new book shelves will be unavailable so new books will be shelved into the collection as they arrive. The newspapers will be available at the Information Services Desk.

Changes to Electronic Resources

The SUNYConnect Advisory Council is thrilled to present new resources to the SUNY community. Beginning July 1, 2006 the following new full-text resources will be available to all SUNYConnect participants:

• Academic Search Premier
• Business Source Premier
• Education Research Complete (available in fall of 2006)
• CINAHL Plus with Full Text
• CINAHL Select
• MasterFILE Premier
• Regional Business News

The SUNYConnect E-Resources collection will no longer include:

• AccuNet/AP Multimedia Archive
• Infotrac Onefile
• Expanded Academic ASAP
• Investext Plus

The Binghamton University Libraries have taken this opportunity to weigh the continuation of other databases that duplicate content offered by the SUNYConnect resources in order to further expand the breadth of coverage offered to the campus community. The following databases will no longer be offered beginning July 31, 2006:

• ProQuest Research Library
• ProQuest ABI Inform
• ProQuest National Newspapers

The Libraries will continue to evaluate information needs covered by these databases which are not included in the new suite of SUNYConnect E-Resources collection in order to maintain the high level of content and services that our faculty and students have come to depend on. The Libraries are committed to offering the widest range of databases and information resources for the research and curricular needs of the campus community.

Changes Coming to the Science Library

The first floor of the Science Library is being renovated to provide a more pleasant environment for research and study and to increase the seating for computers. The ground floor study room is also being refurbished and additional, more flexible seating will be provided. This week furniture and shelving will be removed to clear the space for the new carpeting and furniture. The week of June 19, the first floor reference/computer area and ground floor study room will be re-carpeted. The new computer furniture and study room furniture will be installed the week of June 26. During these few weeks, the reference collection and ground floor study room will be temporarily unavailable. If you need a reference item, please stop by the Science Library Information Services Desk. We plan to have public computers available for use during the renovations.

The next phase of renovations will begin on July 24 when the skylight roof will be replaced and then new carpet and furniture will be installed in the area underneath the new skylight roof. We hope the renovations will be completed by September 6.

If you have any questions, please contact Alesia McManus x74122 or Nancy Abashian x72528.
