Company Directories

The Libraries subscribe to two databases that have the ability to select data to develop lists of companies and their executives. To develop a company list using Lexis Nexis, click on the Business button at the top of the homepage. Once in the Business section, click on the Dossier Create a Company List link on the left side of the screen. Companies can be sorted geographically, by industry, sales, and by number of employees (size). In the Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage database, click on the Companies button at the top of the page. Use the pull-down menu under Advanced Search to select Register Executives, Register Private Co. or Register Public Co. Results can then be broken down geographically, by industry, stock exchange, etc.

Datastream Upgrade

Datastream, the financial and economic database, has now been upgraded from version 2.5 to 4.0. The database has a different look, and it may take a few minutes to get used to the new format. Although it looks somewhat different, the searching in 4.0 is fairly similar to the earlier version.

New Databases, Multiple Catalogs, and Other News

It has been a busy summer for the campus Libraries. There is a new version of infoLINK, the Library catalog. In fact, the Libraries now have two catalogs, infoLINK and Encore. Both access the same library materials, but do so in very different ways. The new Encore catalog, called an "amagoogle" catalog by some, uses simple keyword searching to pull up results which are listed by relevancy.

The Libraries subscribed to a new database, Westlaw Campus Research, over the summer. Westlaw provides access to newspaper and newswire articles, Hoover's Reports, and legal information.

There are now online tutorials available for many of the most commonly used management and economics databases and web sites. The tutorials cover everything from how to find Wall Street Journal articles, to browsing the Bureau of Economic Analysis web site.

Changes in infoLINK

If you use the Libraries' catalog, infoLINK, you'll notice something different. Many recent titles will include the book cover image. Click on this image and there will be links to a book summary, an enlargement of the book cover, the table of contents, an excerpt or first chapter, and a review (not all books have all of these elements). For an example, try typing in "Strategy as Action" into the catalog.

September 11--the Economic Effects

There is a vast amount of material on the September 11, 2001 attacks. However, since this is a business blog, I will focus on the economic and business related materials. To find books on the economics of September 11, go to infoLINK, the Library Catalog. Do a subject search from the pulldown menu and type in "September 11 Terrorist Attacks 2001" (without the quotes). A list of subject headings will come up. Scroll down to the "Economic aspects" subheading. This will bring up a list of books and government documents on the topic. For academic articles, try the EconLit, Academic Search Premier or Business Source Premier databases.

Business ratios update

Last June, I talked about different places to get business ratios. The new Factiva database also contains business ratios. To find ratios, go to Factiva, and click on the Companies/Markets link at the top of the screen. Then, click on Company once again. Type in your company name. When your company comes up, the side of the screen will list various links. Click on either the Financial Results or the Reports link to get your ratios. From the Reports link, you can get a Ratio Comparison Report, which compares key financial ratios of this company against its industry, sector, and the S&P 500 Index aggregates.

What are the sales figures for furniture last April? The answers to all of these questions and much, much more are available on the Census Bureau's web site at http://www.census.gov/ In addition to the detailed population figures that it is known for, the Bureau also collects an enormous amount of economic and business information. Citation Tracking

There are now several ways to discover how many times an article or author has been cited. Web of Science has long been used by faculty and students. However, there are several new databases that also have this facility. Scopus Citation Tracker , which we have on trial through 2006, allows citation searching in the sciences and social sciences. Both Business Source Premiere and Academic Search Premiere allow easy citation searching. It is important to be aware of the journal titles covered in each of these databases to fully understand the results.

I know that many students are assigned Wall Street Journal readings. For those students without subscriptions, here are the various ways to access it. The full-text online version of the Wall Street Journal is only available via the ProQuest databases ABI Inform Global or ProQuest Newspapers. It is not in Lexis Nexis. Online access is provided back to 1984. The Libraries do get a print edition of the WSJ--it is available for the current three months in the Newspaper Room in Bartle Library.
