The Library Annex@Conklin

What is the Library Annex@Conklin?

The Library Annex was established in 1999 to house important older, but lesser used materials in the Libraries’ collections. For many years, the Bartle and Science Library facilities were short of collections space. Over the years, it was necessary to convert some seating space to collections space, but by the mid-1990’s there was literally nowhere to expand shelving on campus. By transferring materials to the Annex, more space was made available in the existing buildings for newer and more heavily used materials. The Library Annex currently houses over 300,000 volumes in a high-density, climate controlled environment.

Where is the Library Annex?

The facility is located 10 miles from the Binghamton University campus in the Behlog & Son Warehouse, 400 Corporate Parkway in Conklin, NY.

What materials are housed in the Annex?

All materials in the Library Annex have been carefully selected by the Libraries’ bibliographers and are low-use older materials. Ongoing moves will continue to be needed to make space in on-campus collections. Library Annex collections include:

  • pre-1980 and other journals from the Bartle, Fine Arts and Science Library collections for which the Libraries have online full-text availability
  • infrequently used monographs and monographic sets from the Bartle and Science Library
  • selected government documents, including all reports of US congressional working committees (Y4s)
  • selected microforms
  • some Special Collections materials, including the Conole Collection of Recorded Sound and originals of Masters theses and Ph.D. dissertations
  • Bartle, Science and Fine Arts current periodicals for which the Libraries have online full-text availability

How do I know which materials are shelved in the Annex?

In the Library Catalog, materials in the Library Annex are indicated with the location: Library Annex - Place A Request.

How are items retrieved from the Annex?

Any library patron, including visitors, may request that materials stored in the Library Annex be delivered to either the Bartle, UDC or Science Library:

Paged materials will be held at the Main, Science, or University Downtown Center Library Circulation Desk for one week, unless longer use is requested. Patrons will be notified only if materials requested cannot be located.

Unless physical volume is specified, electronic document delivery is provided for articles and book chapters 35 pages or less. Some materials are not suitable for scanning, in which case the physical item will be delivered to a pickup location.

Library Annex materials are paged daily, Monday - Friday. Materials requested by 8 a.m. are available by noon the same day. There is no paging Saturday and Sunday.

The 24-hour turnaround time which applies to paging items from circulating collections does not apply to Special Collections. Contact Special Collections staff at (607)777-4844 for assistance accessing these materials.

What are the borrowing policies for items retrieved from the Annex?

Any person who is authorized to borrow other BU Library items may also check out circulating Library Annex materials. Loan policies for Library Annex materials are the same as BU Library policies for other materials. Patrons who do not have borrowing privileges may use materials at the designated library pickup point.

What if I need to browse large quantities of paged materials?

Space to review large quantities of materials from the Annex can be arranged in the Bartle or Science Library.
