Summer Updates 2005
University Libraries Join BioMed Central
by Erin Rushton
As of April 2005, all SUNY four-year and university and health science center campuses are enrolled as BioMed Central (BMC) members. BMC is an independent publishing house committed to providing immediate free access to peerreviewed biomedical research with a portfolio of over 100 journals. The membership was made possible by a generous two-year grant from the Joint Labor/Management Committee made up of members of United University Professions, the Governor’s Office of Employee Relations, and a subsidy from the SUNY University and Health Science Center Libraries.
Until March 2007, SUNY faculty, researchers, and students may submit an unlimited number of research papers to any BMC journals without incurring article processing fees. Several researchers from Binghamton University have already published in BMC, including John C. Chapman, Sandra D. Michael, Karin Sauer, Erica Spotswood, and Laura Almasy. We encourage other authors from Binghamton to publish in BMC, as SUNY’s membership beyond March 2007 will depend, in part, on the use that SUNY students and faculty make of these journals.
Additional information on BMC can be found at the BioMed Central website. For information about Binghamton’s membership, please contact Ed Shephard, Collection Development Officer, or Alesia McManus, Head of the Science Library.
