How do I arrange for a library instruction session?
The Binghamton University Libraries provide library instruction sessions to high school classes. Please contact Alesia McManus, Head of Research, Information & Instructional Services (607-777-4122).
When is the best time to bring a class?
The best time to bring a high school class is during Binghamton University's intersession, or class recess. Please refer to the academic calendar when planning your visit. Appointments should be scheduled at least two weeks in advance.
Is there a class size limit?
The Libraries would prefer a maximum of 30 students per visit. Multiple visits can be arranged if you have more than this number.
What type of supervision is required for the students while at the library?
The class instructor and/or the library media specialist should accompany all student visits.
How can I prepare my class before visiting?
To make the best use of their time at the Binghamton University Libraries, students should have a specific assignment and a general idea of the kind of resources they will be looking for during their visit.
Visiting high school students should first use the resources at their local school and public libraries, and use their interlibrary loan services if items from BU Libraries are needed. Visiting students are encouraged to be familiar with our library catalog, infoLINK or Encore.
Can the students use library computers?
Our policy requires that students under the age of 18 must have an adult present. Students will be given a class login and password that will allow them to access computers in the instruction labs for the duration of their visit.
Can the students borrow library books?
Minors will need their parent or guardian present to register for a borrower card. Please see the Libraries web page for information about a Courtesy Borrower card.
How can the students print and photocopy?
Students may purchase a BUC$ card for $1.00 and add value to the card. Print-outs cost $0.08 per page and photocopies are $0.10 per page. BUC$ machines, printers, and photocopiers are located in the Bartle and Science Libraries. The BUC$ machines only accept small bills.
Where are the libraries on campus?
