Citing Your Sources

When writing your paper, should give credit to those authors and works you consulted and enable the reader of your paper to locate those sources. This information is cited in a bibliography according to the style specified by your instructor. All citations contain the same universal information: the author(s), title, and publishing information.

Citing sources is not only an issue of academic respect, but failure to lead to punishment under the rules of Bingamton University.

For more information on the University policies, as well as help in determining what to cite and when to cite it, consult the Plagiarism and Academic Integrity web page.

For information on how to cite sources, see the following sources:

  • MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (available at the Bartle Library, Science Library and UDC Library in the Reference section; ask at any Reference Desk for help)
  • Citing Sources: MLA Style - a short guide covering some of the more common type of sources.
If it is not explicitly covered on this guide, then refer to the handbook mentioned above.
  • The Binghamton University Writing Center can also provide in-depth assistance if you are struggling with citing as well.

Note on using on-line style guides: MLA does not have an official online site to assist students. They do answer some common questions on their own website, and there are some reputable guides, produced mostly by colleges and college libraries, they provide greater detail then the quick sheet noted above.

However, all online guides must be treated with caution, because mistakes can be made. For a listing of reputable online sources, see the table provided on the Citiation Help webpage.
