Finding Journal and Magazine
Articles Using Databases and Indexes
Databases and indexes allow you to search through multiple sources at one time to locate articles relating to a specific topic. Access to these databases are available through metaLink, which groups database by broad subject area.
There is a selection of multi-disciplinary databases that provide some full-text articles under the Places to Start category of metaLink. These databases provide access to a wide range of articles across many different topics.
Depending on your topic, you might find it useful to look in subject specific databases, which are organized according to school or area of study in metaLINK under "Browse databases by Subject." For more help on how to navigate metaLINK, view the tutorial (with sound) below.

What is a Scholarly Journal?
Very often, you will be required to use peer-reviewed
(or scholarly, academic or refereed) journals. Peer review is
a process by which a panel of experts in the discipline evaluates
a journal article before it is published. Many journal articles
are not accepted for publication by scholars knowledgeable in
the field.
For more information on the difference between a
magazine article, a journal article and a newspaper article, see
our What is a Scholary Journal? page.
Finding the Article
Not every article in the above databases are going
to be full-text. If the article is not in full-text:
1. Click on .
If the article is available in electronic full-text, a link
to the article will appear.
2. If there is "no electronic full-text available," then click on infoLINK. infoLINK will appear if we have ever gotten that journal
in paper in the libraries.
3. If there is "no electronic full-text available" and you do not see infoLINK, see the box below.
If you are in a database and you do not see
then you must search infoLINK
to see if we own the journal or magazine. You can "Change
to "Library Holdings" to determine what years we have
in our collection.
Print periodicals are arranged alphabetically by title in the Libraries. For more information
consult the guide Finding
Journal Articles.
If you can not find the journal you are looking for,
either through Get it@BU or by searching the
infoLINK, you can request it by using ILLiad,
the Inter-Libary Loan system.
ILLIad is simple to use - you follow the on-screen directions
to set up an account with your PODs username and password. Once the account is set up, you can request
books and articles we do not own using your account.
Material may be sent to you electronically or shipped
in paper form, depending on the provider. Materials
may arrive in a few days (such as electronic delivery),
but can take up to two weeks. Notification will be sent
via e-mail to your binghamton.edu account.
